As marketers in the video space, we are always seeking out the latest innovations and exploring their potential impact on our clients and the ecosystem in general. Snapchat Spectacles and circular video are certainly on everyone’s radar right now, so we decided to pick up a pair and experiment. Check out our thoughts below—and don’t miss our video!
On the Hunt for Spectacles
After doing our research we found that these wearable video sunglasses are only sold from exclusive pop-up SnapBot vending machines. We set out right away to pick up this latest technology gadget. The process is simple but long, since you are assigned an entry time once arriving at the store location. So finally, at 5:30pm on the dot, we were allowed to approach the SnapBots for our exciting purchase. Pairing the Spectacles to our Tremor Video Snapchat account was easy, and we were up and running in no time.
Time to Experiment
We figured our holiday party would be a perfect place to test out this new form of circular video. Throughout the evening we passed around the Spectacles for different employees to record a holiday party experience through their own lens. Circular video is exclusive to Snapchat’s app and allows viewers to watch video seamlessly from both the horizontal and vertical views on mobile.
Our Takeaways for the Industry
While it’s fun to experiment, we also wanted to pick the brains of our Product and Sales teams for their thoughts on industry implications. What is a Product lead’s first reaction to circular video? How does our Sales team anticipate that brands will leverage this new format? What does monetization look like?
