Tremor Video is proud of its employees, and this month especially so. The Diversity Affinity Group launched ‘The Pride Series @ Tremor Video’ with the company’s fundraiser for the New York AIDS Walk. We raised over $3,000 around the incentive to “pie an executive”, and Aaron Saltz, our GC, was the most deserving of the honor! In addition, a number of employees participated in the walk to support this important cause.
Next up, ‘The ABC’s of LGBTQ*’ kicked off Pride Month here in our NY office. Breaking down LGBTQ* perceptions in media and advertising to influence a more diverse landscape, the panel included Garth Bardsley (VP, Digital Video, MTV Networks), Mike Hofman (Executive Digital Director, Condé Nast, GQ), Laurie Horsman (VP, People, Tremor Video), and was moderated by Monica Seebohm (Senior Director, Global Demand, Tremor Video).
What does every letter in ‘LGBTTQQIAAP’ stand for? What does the growth of Pride advertising mean for us? The discussion covered these areas, and more, including:
- The juxtapostion between the advancement of LGBTQ* rights and the popularity of gay culture in media versus the rise of discrimination. (“1 in 4 LGBT people report experiencing discrimination in 2016” - Center for America Progress.)
- A lack of diversity in LGBTQ* advertising; most ads/television shows feature a cis, white, upwardly-mobile male, but the needle is slowly moving with the popularization of profiles like RuPaul, Laverne Cox, and George Takei.
- With access to the internet readily available in many third-world countries, how will advertising influence communities that still have laws against LGBTQ* relations? (“More than 70 countries have laws that make same-sex relations a punishable offense” - National Geographic, 2017.)
- Pride advertising has skyrocketed year-over-year and many big brands are making an impact.
